Autumn Term 2024

Reading

In Year 5, we are very enthusiastic about reading and books! We want to encourage children's reading for pleasure and enjoyment. As part of our school provision, children will have a school library book. This should come to and from school daily for the children to read and enjoy. Please read with your child and foster a life-long love of reading.

Struggling to engage your child with books at home? Please let Miss Ebbutt know.

Topic

Our new topic is The Groundbreaking Greeks. Our topic will investigate the legacy of the Ancient Greeks. We will study the city state of Athens, everyday life, Greek culture and religion and of course, the Olympics! It is sure to be an interesting adventure across the Autumn term.

Science

Our new Science topic will teach the children all about human reproduction and ageing. We will study animal life cycles, including the human life cycle. We will explore human growth and development to old age, including the changes experienced during puberty and human reproduction.  We will also be studying Properties of Materials.

Physical Education

This half term, Year 5 will have PE with Mr Troman on a Wednesday.  Your child will need to come to school in their PE uniform. This consists of a yellow T-shirt, blue shorts and trainers. They will also have swimming on a Friday afternoon, and will need to bring their swimming kit with them:

  • A waterproof coat or if the weather is hot, a sunhat, and drink.
  • Swimwear along with a towel in a bag large enough for their clothes, shoes and towel. Please note that girls’ costumes should be one-piece and boys should wear fitted swimming trunks, as board shorts tend to create a drag through the water which hampers their swimming ability.  All items should be clearly named.
  • Please also pack a spare plastic bag for your child’s wet costume and towels.

Autumn Timetable

Here is the daily timetable for this term. Although there may be some changes for additional activities or visits, we try to follow this as closely as we can. Please take the time to look at this with your child before the school week and to review each day with them afterwards.

Note: Read the timetable from left to right, there are two pages (morning and afternoon).

The Groundbreaking Greeks and The Circulatory System: Below, you will find glossaries, knowledge organisers and home learning activities based on our Topic and Science units.

Y5/6 Spellings: Alongside the regular practice of homework spellings, there are a set of Year 5/6 spellings that children are expected to know by the end of the two-year phase. Please practise these words regularly with your child (first link).

Maths Resources: Below, you will find a 12 x 12 times table grid. Children are expected to be fluent in their times tables when they start Year 6. Please practice times tables with your child and encourage them to use Times Table Rockstars!
