Children’s Mobility Visit to Spain, 23rd - 26th May 2022
The mobility visit to Spain was our third mobility visit in the space of two months! Six children from The Beacon had the chance to meet children from the other countries involved in the project and take part in a range of cultural and technological activities.
Our journey began in the early hours of Sunday morning when we gathered together to take the coach to Bristol Airport. We then flew out to Alicante and transferred on to Lorca where we would be for the week.
We arrived to a rapturous welcome at Colegio Publico Andres Garcia Soler and gathered together for a welcome and a chance to watch a film containing memories of all the trips in the project so far.
We took part in a variety of workshops in school that allowed us to use a range of digital technologies - we programmed robots and discussed how they could be used for jobs in the future; recorded audio-books and shared how these and e-books are changing the nature of publishing and created artwork in the style of a local Spanish artist. The children very much enjoyed taking part in the workshops and having the chance to collaborate with the children from the other schools as well.
As part of our project, we were able to visit a local plant for the packing and distributing of capers and we got to see what sorts of digital technology were used in the plant. We also got to cook using local recipes and ingredients. Another interesting visit was to a mining museum. Guides took us through the vast tunnels and explained what technologies the miners had available when the mine was operating and how that changed over time. The highlight of this trip was seeing an amazing gypsum geode that had been discovered in the centre of the mine.
During the week, we also had the chance to visit Aguilas where we went on a boat trip around the bay and learnt about the island that a British spy lived on during and after World War Two! We also visited Murcia where we had chance to look inside the amazing cathedral and see the theatre with its famous unsold seat and the legends that go with it.
Back in Lorca, we visited the Paso Blanco Museum, learning about the special parades that take place in the town each Easter and we also visited the Castle, learning about how its use and ownership has changed throughout history to the modern hotel that's on the site today!
Before we knew it, our trip was over and we were headed back to Alicante Airport and home, having made lots of new friends, lots of new memories and having lots to share with all our friends back at school!
