We are the Ocean - COP 28
In Autumn 2023 and Spring 2024, our Year 6 children worked with children in schools across the UK and UAE on a project led by the University of Exeter called ‘We are the Ocean’. The project saw the children study endangered seagrass eco-systems and the species that rely on them. The children took part in online sessions with marine scientists and ocean activists. They connected with the local coastline whilst having fun foraging and sketching.
The project culminated in a Poetry Anthology (which you can find below) and a film, both of which were shared at COP28 in Dubai. The Beacon children appeared in this film and provided the powerful voiceover. The hope is that both the film and the anthology will educate others about the importance of our one ocean.
Below, you will discover some photographs from the project, the film and the anthology!
After the project...
The Diocese of Exeter interviewed our children and shared information about the project, they will also share the work with the Church of England Synod. https://exeter.anglican.org/devon-primary-school-students-voice-we-are-the-ocean-and-call-for-change-in-moving-cop28-video/
We recognise that this web-page doesn't tell you about the action the children will take to help protect our ocean; they will be working on it in the latter part of this school year, so please do visit again!
